About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on WordPress Developer to build, extend, and maintain custom WordPress sites and applications. You will work across the full lifecycle of WordPress projects — from translating design and content requirements into custom themes and Gutenberg blocks, to engineering bespoke plugins, to optimizing performance, security, and SEO on production sites. The role suits someone who is fluent in PHP and modern JavaScript, comfortable inside the WordPress hook system, and opinionated about writing maintainable, scalable WP code rather than relying on page builders or off-the-shelf themes.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain custom WordPress themes from Figma/design files, using a starter theme or theme.json and following WordPress coding standards.
- Build custom Gutenberg blocks (block.json, block.json-driven registration, InnerBlocks, block patterns) and reuse them across sites.
- Engineer custom plugins to add features the core platform and ecosystem do not cover, with clean activation/deactivation hooks, secure data handling, and proper sanitization.
- Model content with custom post types, custom fields (e.g. ACF, Meta Box, or native meta), and custom taxonomies that fit editorial workflows.
- Integrate the WordPress REST API and (where appropriate) WPGraphQL to power decoupled front-ends, mobile apps, or third-party integrations.
- Optimize site performance: caching strategy (object cache, page cache, CDN), image pipelines, Critical CSS, database query tuning, and Core Web Vitals.
- Harden WordPress installations: capability mapping, nonces, escaping, file upload restrictions, malware cleanup workflows, and CI-driven plugin/theme updates.
- Collaborate with designers, content editors, and DevOps to ship reliable releases via Git-based workflows and staging environments.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional WordPress development experience, with a portfolio of custom themes and plugins (not just "site building").
- Strong proficiency in PHP (7.4+), MySQL, and modern JavaScript (ES6+, React for Gutenberg block development).
- Deep understanding of the WordPress hook system (actions, filters), the Loop, template hierarchy, and the REST API.
- Experience building custom Gutenberg blocks using @wordpress/scripts, block.json, and the block-editor packages.
- Solid grasp of WordPress security fundamentals: nonces, escaping (esc_html, esc_attr, esc_url, wp_kses), capability checks, and SQL injection prevention via $wpdb / wpdb::prepare.
- Comfort with Git, Composer, WP-CLI, and local development tooling (Local, Docker, or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of WordPress performance optimization and ability to read a slow query log or New Relic trace.
Nice to Have
- Experience with WPGraphQL or headless WordPress front-ends (Next.js, Astro, Nuxt).
- Familiarity with WooCommerce customization (filters, gateways, product data modeling).
- Contributions to WordPress core, a major plugin, or the open-source WP community.
- Experience with multisite, multilingual setups (WPML/Polylang), or large-scale publishing workflows.
- Familiarity with infrastructure: Nginx/Apache, Redis/Memcached, CDN configuration (Cloudflare, Fastly), and basic CI/CD.
- ACF/Meta Box or native block patterns for editor-first content modeling.
